Joseph and Martha  then returned to Worcestershire as their first child Annie was born on 23 January 1871 at Leigh Worcestershire . The date is recorded in family bible and the place is shown in the 1881 Census. Their second child, William was born on 8th September 1872 at Madresfield, and their third, Ellen on 9th October 1873 at Madresfield. Again these dates are recorded in a family bible and the places recorded on the 1881 Census return.

On this return both Joseph and his wife are recorded as Domestic Gardeners residing at the Cottage Madresfield. They would have been employed at Madresfield  Court the home of Earl Beauchamp as all property is tythe property owned by the estate

The church of St Mary the Virgin Madresfield was a gift of Henry, 5th Earl Beauchamp in 1867.  There were two previous churches on the site. The first a Norman Church was near to Madresfield Court and the second built in 1852 on the current site.  This church suffered structural weaknesses due to inadequate foundations and was rebuilt by the 5th Earl.
